Trigeminal neuralgia (also referred to as tic douloureux) is a persistent pain disorder affecting the trigeminal nerve, which controls facial sensibility. 

Nerve irritation or injury is assumed to be the actual cause of trigeminal neuralgia, but this is still not entirely known. It’s possible that it may be brought on because of the following: 

Blood Vessel Pressing on Nerve: One theory is that a blood artery pressing against the nerve may be the source of trigeminal neuralgia. In the Meckel cave, a small passageway in the skull where the trigeminal nerve travels, there is a chance that a blood vessel may press against the nerve. This pressure may aggravate the nerve and make it overly sensitive, which would result in the trigeminal neuralgia-specific facial pain.

Multiple Sclerosis: Another idea is that multiple sclerosis (MS) may be the cause of trigeminal neuralgia. MS is an autoimmune condition that affects the central nervous system. The myelin sheath, a protective covering that surrounds the trigeminal nerve, is thought to be attacked and damaged by the immune system, causing irritation and discomfort.

Tumor: A third theory believes that trigeminal neuralgia could be brought on by a tumor. The trigeminal nerve may become over sensitive as a result of pressure from tumors that develop close to it or in the Meckel cave.

No matter what the specific cause, trigeminal neuralgia pain is thought to be brought on by abnormal activity in the trigeminal nerve. The nerve's stimulation causes it to transmit a pain signal to the brain, which the brain interprets as an abrupt and intense episode of facial pain.
